8 reasons why to practice yoga in the morning!

If you need some help in getting yourself to yoga class first thing in the morning (and we wouldn’t blame you!), take a look at these reasons to make the effort. We promise you, it’ll be worth it!

  1. SET YOUR INTENTION

Setting an intention has a great power because it directs all our energy towards what we want. When we practice in the morning we can get really clear of our intention and set the tone for the rest of our day.

  1. TIME FOR YOURSELF

Finding the perfect moment in our busy life is always hard. Planning our practice for the same time each morning is a way to take care of yourself while also improving the rest of our day.

  1. ENERGIZE YOUR BODY

Overnight our muscles rest and while we are sleeping layers of connective tissue build up in between them, which is why we need to stretch when we wake up. If we don’t move and stretch, these layers of connective tissue continue to build up causing tight muscles and pain. Practicing yoga gives us the best balance between strength and stretch and allows the energy to begin to flow freely in your body.

  1. INCREASE YOUR WELLBEING

Practicing yoga in the morning allows us to switch on our parasympathetic nervous system. When this happens, our heart rate slows down and the blood vessels dilate, allowing more blood and energy to flow throughout our whole body and our mind and body to relax. Moreover, there is now a great deal of scientific evidence showing that practicing yoga reduces anxiety and increases our general sense of wellbeing. When we start our day feeling calm, we can be the ‘eye of the storm’, even when things might get challenging later.

  1. STOP PROCRASTINATING

If we practice yoga first thing in the morning we ensure that we set that time into our agenda, still having the rest of the day to catch up with our everyday activities.

  1. BECOME PRESENT

Focusing on our breath and on the sensations of our body is one of the best ways to become present in our lives. Being present allow us to enjoy every single moment without expectation. Practicing ‘presence’ also leads us to be more focused and able to concentrate. What better way to start and fully appreciate our day?

  1. START KNOWING YOURSELF ON A DEEPER LEVEL

When we start practicing every morning we start raising your awareness of our body and mind and noticing how our bad habits affect our body. For instance, if we feel heavy, it might be that we are eating foods that are difficult to digest. On a mental level, the meditation practice brings our awareness to our thoughts and we can start to understand our patterns of thinking more clearly, which leads us to have more control over how we think and feel.

  1. BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD

When we finish our practice there is a “I-don’t-know-what-but-it-feels-amazing!” sensation. That’s because practicing yoga raises serotonin levels and endorphins that makes us feel and look better. Moreover there are many studies that show how people who practice yoga regularly, slow down the aging of the heart, liver and kidneys. After all, the outside is just a reflection of the inside!

At Sutherland Yoga, we have morning classes on a Tuesday 6.30-7.30am and on a Friday 6.15-7.15 and 7.30-8.15
